To mark the festival of Bealtaine, celebrating creativity as we age, and the upcoming St. Gallen: Words Upon the Wave exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street, join calligrapher and artist Tim O’Neill on this special workshop.

This workshop will begin with a tour in the Museum where you will explore life in Early Medieval Ireland, the coming of Christianity and the introduction of writing and manuscripts in Ireland. This will be followed by a demonstration by Tim O’Neill, where you will learn how to write in the early medieval Irish text of Insular Majuscule. Participants will have the opportunity to see and handle replica artefacts related to calligraphy, such as vellum, quills, and inks, providing a hands-on experience of the materials used in early medieval Irish writing.

As a historian Tim O Neill has researched and published on medieval Ireland especially on the manuscript  tradition. He is also a practising calligrapher and has recently published a book on Irish calligraphy with the Royal Irish Academy entitled 'The Irish Art of Calligraphy'. 

This workshop will last approximately two hours and is not wheelchair accessible. Art materials will be provided for use on the day. Tea, coffee and a small treat will also be provided.

Places are limited and the workshop is free. Interested attendees are asked to fill out this application form to apply for a place.
