Dublin by Dusk: Courts and Cloisters: Music from Medieval Ireland and Europe

Immerse yourself in the sound world of medieval Ireland and Europe in the company of two of Ireland’s foremost historical musicians: Laoise O’Brien, recorders, and Siobhán Armstrong, harps. Using copies of medieval Irish and European instruments – including the iconic Brian Boru harp – the duo will be performing music from early Ireland, Britain and continental Europe including evocative repertory by the 14th-century, Guillaume de Machaut, the 15th-century Guillaume Dufay, together with contemporaneous English and Italian music, and the earliest surviving Irish repertory: medieval plainchant from Irish monasteries.
Recorder player, Laoise O'Brien, has been described in the Irish Times as a crusader with mesmerising skills and boundless imagination. She has worked as a chamber musician, orchestral player and a solo artist in multiple genres from medieval, renaissance and baroque through to newly-composed works. Laoise has released five solo albums and has contributed to numerous radio broadcasts and documentaries in the varied roles of performer, presenter and producer.
Siobhán Armstrong is one of Europe’s foremost harpists who perform on reconstructions of medieval to baroque harps, performing and recording with prestigious historical-music soloists, chamber-music ensembles and baroque orchestras internationally. The debut CD of her ensemble, The Irish Consort—Music, Ireland and the Sixteenth Century—has shed light on a neglected century in Irish music, and was an Irish Times international classical-music recordings top-five pick of 2021. Siobhán is the founding director of the Historical Harp Society of Ireland and Professor of Historical Harps at the Royal College of Music, London.
