Introduction to Smart Phone Photography

 

Discover the art of capturing moments through the lens in this hands-on workshop at the National Museum of Ireland – Turlough Park. Designed for schools, this engaging session introduces students to the fundamentals of photography, including composition, lighting and storytelling through images.
Participants will explore the museum’s stunning grounds and exhibitions, applying creative techniques to produce their own photographs. Perfect for fostering visual literacy, creativity, and observational skills, this course combines practical experience with an appreciation of photography as an expressive medium.

Learning Outcomes: 

We will learn about,
• Exposure, focus, and depth of field.
• The use of the rule of thirds, when to use it, or not.
• How to see and frame images.
• Understanding the use of colour or black & white to tell your story.
The workshop would also involve a practical outdoor shooting session making photographs in a
number of different photographic genres, for example, landscape, architecture, macro, fine art,
black & white.
We will then conclude with a group critique encouraging constructive feedback on captured
images.

About the facilitator:
 
Michael Gannon is a professional visual/photographic artist working in lens-based photography and in alternative/historical processes from the mid 1800s. (Cyanotype, Anthotype, Lumen prints etc)
 
Michael has also had a number of solo shows 'A May Day Custom' The Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar 2011.
'When The Sea Comes Knocking' Ballina Arts Centre 2023.
He has also exhibited in selected group visual arts exhibitions including The Claremorris Open 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014 and The Laroque Arts FesAval, France. Michael's work has also appeared in various books and publications and he has facilitated workshops for many years.
