Curtain Fabric

Curtain fabric designed by Louis le Brocquy (1916-2012)

This hand-printed Irish linen curtain fabric was designed by Louis le Brocquy. This bold pattern called 'Flight' was typical of mid-20th century textiles. The design shows that le Brocquy was influenced by international art movements and philosophy.

Louis le Brocquy was born in Dublin in 1916. He is considered one of Ireland's foremost artists. In 1943, le Brocquy became a founding member of the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. This initiative was created to counter anti-modernist bias at a deeply conservative time in Ireland.

In 1953 Louis le Brocquy collaborated with the architect Michael Scott (1905-1989). They established Signa Design Consultancy. They offered clients a broad range of expertise and creative services. Their objective was ''to fill a void in the visual life of Ireland by introducing the trained industrial designer''. Le Brocquy in this new guise designed screen printed fabrics for a series of furnishing fabrics commissioned by John McGuire Ltd. of Dublin. Other Irish artists also contributed designs.
