Pocket Guide to Northern Ireland

Pocket Guide to Northern Ireland, published by the United States Army for American soldiers stationed in Northern Ireland during World War II c.1942.

Issued by the War and Navy Departments, Washington D.C. Prepared by Special Service Division, Services of Supply, United States Army. U.S. Government Printing Office, 1942 – O-481547.

US Army soldiers stationed in Northern Ireland received this booklet explaining Irish history, traditions and social habits to help them integrate into local life.

On the outbreak of war in 1939, the Irish Government declared military neutrality. Criticised by the Allied powers, Ireland’s neutrality was defended by the Taoiseach, Éamon de Valera. However, Ireland often provided assistance to Allied countries. Northern Ireland, as part of the UK, was not neutral and was targeted in German air raids.
