To mark the National Day of Commemoration, join us at Collins Barracks for a weekend of handling objects and tours exploring Ireland's turbulent decade of conflict 1913-1923, and learn about the historic truce to end the Irish War of Independence 104 years ago.

The National Day of Commemoration observes both the truce that brought the end of the Irish War of Independence and commemorating all Irishmen and Irishwomen who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations.

Hands-On History

Step back in time with Museum Educators for an interactive hands-on history session featuring artefacts from the Museum’s handling collection. Marking the National Day of Commemoration, explore the experiences of Irish men and women during wars and United Nations missions, through objects connected to key historical events, including the Irish War of Independence, the First World War, and UN peacekeeping operations.

Friday, 10 July 2026
11:00 - 12:30

Handling sessions can be expected to take from 5-15 minutes.
Drop-in handling sessions will take place in Reception at Collins Barracks. Booking is not required. Children must be fully supervised by a parent or adult who is in loco parentis.
